Little Falls Canal Celebration, Utica Councilwoman Sues Utica Mayor, Lots to do in the 315 this Week
Edition 17 - August 5 to August 11

We’re halfway through the summer, and Labor Day is right around the corner. It’s time to plan a few 315-day trips to ease the kids back into school. This week, Little Falls and Sylvan Beach have canal celebrations, and we’re less than a month from the State Fair. Hopefully, the wildfires calm down and the air clears up.
We’re working on a referral program to help get the newsletter out to more people, in turn, getting more local “gems” (God, I hate that word), and more events not shared. We want to hear from you. Is there anything we can cover? Anything you want to see? Let us know.

Around the 315: Celebrate the Erie Canal at the 38th CanalFest in Little Falls
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal. What better way to celebrate than checking out Little Falls' 38th Annual Canal Celebration?
From August 6th through the 10th, Little Falls transforms with a city-wide celebration. The celebration has transformed over the years. The traditional fair changed into a community event, showcasing what makes Little Falls unique. The city encourages anyone from the Mohawk Valley to come enjoy family-friendly activities, food, and more year after year.
Check out this Facebook post to see what’s going on during the festival.

The 315 Digest
Utica Councilwoman Katie Aiello is suing Utica Mayor Michael Galime and the city’s Board of Estimates and Apportionment for what she states is an unlawful cost-of-living salary increase for elected officials. According to Aiello, a 3% All Urban Consumer Price Index increase is required for the raise, but the US BLS only shows a 2.9% increase, making the salary increase unlawful. We started following after seeing social media posts from Aiello. Read the full story here on CNY Homepage.
On July 30, Rome Mayor Lanigan announced RPD and RFD will start bike patrols along public trails for public safety responses and homeless outreach. While no incidents have been reported, citizens have raised concerns over the homeless population along trails. Along with outreach, ICAN will offer housing and other assistance to homeless people. Read the full story from the Times Telegram.
The Kelberman Center in Utica announced April’s Walk for Autism helped raise $8,945 in donations to help fund local autism services. Mastrovito Hyundai in Yorkville hosted the walk and was a major donor for the fundraiser. Read more from WKTV.
